Michael Schmidt – Ich fotographiere in Berlin

I used to write about Michael Schmidt on this very tumblr some time ago.

Well life may be a bitch, but I happen to have a few friends, and they are better than yours. 

For example the other day I was watching the skies

whilst suffering in my lumbar vertebrae, and I saw this guy, believe it or not, jumping right off his plane from Berlin, landing on my balcony & handing me an issue of Frieze d/e, n° 17, Dezember 2014/Februar 2015. 

This wasn’t no ordinary issue, as the Geto Boys would have said, back in the days.

For what reason? They had an article about this very same Michael Schmidt about whom there is next to close to nutin’ in teh interwebz!

So here it is, sorry for the terrible scan, and sorry I only scanned the english translation (tried to read it in german, understood a solid sentence in the whole article) 

And of course, sorry to Frieze d/e and Kolja Reichert if I’m ripping off their article, but hey, it’s been a year, I guess no one is gonna buy it now, right? Credit goes to them, but The Peoples need to know about Michael Schmidt.

There aren’t many resources online about Michael Schmidt

However there is A blog post by Tim Atherton! : in many ways it is a counterbalance to (or antidote to?) much contemporary photography, especially of the Gursky, Struth or Soth style. Even some of his “straightest” images have an air of enigma about them and their are layers to unravel – especially in a series. It provokes thought and imagination, having the depth of a good poem – and it takes as much work as reading a good poem to draw out its many meanings.


A 1987 article from Gerry Badger in Creative Camera also has a few words for the Great And Only One Almighty Robert Adams. Twenty-five years later, Schmidt or Gossage still are quite unkown to many people, including people interested in photography. Go figure.
